Time to Split

We slept a bit this morning to make up for some of the “bell tower sleep deprivation” we’d had over the last two nights (Tammy needed more). After breakfast we checked out (the hotel’s checkout was at 10:00a) and got on the road. It was a shorter driving day, so we stuck to the coast road to get more scenery. After an hour of driving we came across the historic town of Trogir so decided to stop in to see what it was about. After walking through many of the streets and getting some good pictures, we had lunch in a near old courtyard-turned-restaurant.

Here are some of the images that caught our eye...

Parking was a little confusing, but we’ve learned that if you are visiting “Old Town”, be prepared to deal with parking, people and more expensive food...but great atmosphere. We left Trogir pleased to have stopped in, and continued our scenic drive along the coast.

Once we started seeing signs for Split, we followed them toward the ‘Centar’ - which is a sign in most cities for the City Center area. Because of the walled Old Town being pedestrian only, we drove around in circles on one way streets until we were frustrated. Finally we parked and walked to near where the room should be in the People’s Square section of Old Town Split. Tammy had to message the host, as there was some confusion from our last minute booking and mails about check-in time. We waited 10-15min in the nearby bar until he showed up - no real issue.

The host was super nice and spent a good deal of time giving us suggestions on sights, restaurants and travel planning for the islands. The room is from some of the original buildings in Split, so the exposed walls are thousand year old stones. There was also a nice bowl of cookies, a bottle of wine, some chocolates - all very thoughtful touches.

We pondered what to do with the evening - had to move the car to better parking, could go see some of the beaches, or drive to a few sights the host had suggested. The car was due to be returned in the morning, so we wanted to get the most of it - we opted to go to some of the less busy beaches that locals know about. We drove out on a road into a park area called Marjan Forest Park until the main road turned into a pedestrian-only roadway, then parked the car and walked maybe a half mile to an unmarked beach. We got in and swam (there were probably only 20 people there) for half an hour. We decided to return the car tonight so we wouldn’t have to rush in the morning.

We had a little trouble getting a Uber to pick us up, but ultimately got a ride back from the rental car drop off to Old Town Split for ~$4. After a short break we headed out for food in Old Town. There were lots of choices to pick from so we explored a bit, taking in the vibe.

This was from our room...

After scouting for a while we went back to a restaurant that caught our attention because of their ribs. The portions were huge and the server was great, so we wrapped up the night full and happy, but definitely tired from the day...and hoping for no bells tonight ;-).
