Leaving Croatia

Today was a travel day (meaning not as many pics), so slept in a little then had complimentary breakfast in the hotel. We packed and were on the road by 9:30a, heading to the Zagreb airport (ZAG) to return the rental car... about a 30 minute drive.

Since we checked in online we went right to the security screening checkpoint (only one in Croatia) and were stopped for the fresh olive oil we’d bought on Vis island. We had to go back to check our bag, which we intentionally didn’t do since it was 50 Euros each. We thought we’d check to see if we could check them in for free using our credit card benefits. As we stood in the line to check the bag we decided that the $5 olive oil probably wasn’t worth it, offered the oil to a passenger in line and went back through security.

To our delight, we discovered that the Priority Lounge in the Zagreb airport terminal was open, so we took advantage of being nearly alone in there, having drinks and food and sitting in their massage chairs...ahh.

We had enough time to also watch another Netflix episode before walking out the lounge doors that was right next to our gate and on to the plane - nice! The flight to Paris (CDG) was around two hours and went by quickly. In the airport we transferred and went back through the international transfers security checkpoint, so had to lose the extra drinks we brought from the lounge :-(. Don apparently had burned all of his airport karma because he got stopped in every checkpoint for some form of additional search.

There was enough time before the next flight to use all the spare Euros we’d brought from our last trip to Europe, buying a couple coffees, a salad and a sandwich.

On the flight from Paris to New York (JFK), the flight was only 40% full, so with some skillful moving we had an entire row to ourselves for the whole flight...heaven.

While the flight was long, it was good to have broken it into three legs - ZAG-CDG = 2hrs, CDG-JFK = 9hrs & JFK-SEA = 5hrs. Wearing a mask the whole time was not ideal and they were particular about not having cloth masks (weird), but everyone was diligent about the matter.

When we landed in New York, we’d already completed a mandatory COVID tracing form, then had our temperature checked as we left the plane.

Since we‘d used some points to stay at the JFK Hilton, we caught their free shuttle to the hotel (sweet) and got upgraded to a bigger room too (suite). Grace called right when we got in the room, so it was nice to catch up with her now that we had normal U.S. cell service again.

Dinner was in the hotel, although Hilton is only serving take away meals - we had fish & chips + a cheeseburger in the room...not bad because we used the time to catch up on our digital worlds. We stayed up until nearly 2:00a (Croatian time) to try and get back on the right time schedule.
