Woke up to a really cold morning (Tammy got up at 4:30a and slept in the car) Tammy has been waking up around 5-6 almost every morning. Mostly when camping due to laying on the ground too long and her body hurting from that- quickly made coffee and got on the road to Uluru. We made good enough time that we could catch the free “Mala Walk” that the rangers lead (the couple last night had told us about it). We quickly had breakfast in the parking lot while looking at the surreal scenery. The walk had lots of really interesting info about Uluru and its significance to the indigenous people’s culture. We chose not to climb to the top since it was against the Anangu people’s beliefs (didn’t stop hundreds of others though).
After the walk we drove to Yarula where we’d reserved a campsite, got some lunch and got our tent put up. We decided to drive to “nearby” Kata Tjuta to hike a bit and see how it compared - hard to explain the scale of these formations. After the hike we went through the cultural center, then back to Uluru for sunset - the color and scale is unbelievable. We made dinner in the car while the sun was setting and took lots of pics.
After sunset we drove around the other side of “the rock” (saw another dingo and maybe a red kangaroo) - more stunning shapes on the other side. We had to sit in a bit of traffic coming back into the campground (all from watching the sunset). We repacked for the flight tomorrow, took showers and called it a night.
