We have been enjoying our late wake up time, this morning was no different. It seems like the routine has been late to raise, late afternoon nap and late bed time. We are trying to work around the heat outdoors. Luckily it seems most things stay open well into the night. All the hotels we have booked on this trip have come with free breakfast. Seems to be the thing most hotels in Turkey do. So this morning we had another nice hotel-provided breakfast looking over the marina. We decided to checkout and get on the road quickly, but had to get this pic of the Lycian tomb next to the hotel (hotel in background).
Then the obligatory stop to get a taste of home, which was right across the square from the hotel. There has been several Starbucks in Turkey but we have mostly resisted and have only gone twice.
As we headed out of Fethiye, we stopped at the Tomb of Amyntas which was just minutes away.
Right down the road was another tomb that exemplified how Turkey integrates artifacts with the current society’s needs.
Out of town we continued the crazy coastal road theme driving up and over ridges that extend out into the Mediterranean. We opted to take a 30min detour to go swimming at Sarsala Koyu, which was a more family-friendly beach - clear with nice sand and shallow far out from shore. The drive down to this beach held a close race with many of the others we’ve had to navigate, but was worth a little nail biting.
After a couple hours in the water, we drove back into the town of Dalaman to get a good local lunch and use the cash machine (away from the major cities, cash is still the preferred way to pay).
Along the drive out to Marmaris (nearly 2hrs) we pulled off on a side road to take a break, which appeared to be a trailhead for a segment of the Lycian Way. Then we were back on the highway until we passed through downtown Marmaris to get to our hotel on the far end of town. This last segment of road also traversed a steep ridge, so we spent another 30min on switchbacks before finally arriving at Eden Pyara Hotel Turunc.
As we checked in we learned that the hotel included both a dinner and breakfast in our stay. Since we had a little time to burn until dinner, we walked along the water and through the main street of Turunc.
On the walk back to the hotel we saw all varieties of fruit trees (clockwise: fig, banana, lime, orange)
The soup at dinner was fabulous and it ended up being a five course meal!
Full and happy we spent some time in the room straightening out room reservations and talking with Grace. Tomorrow we leave the Mediterranean or the Aegean Sea at our plush night in Bodrum!
