Not a great night’s sleep - got up and made coffee at the campground (7:15) then drove to the Kings Canyon trailhead and made breakfast used WiFi (free at the trailhead - what?!)
Hiked the Canyon Rim trail (~3hrs) - beautiful, unique landscape, nice trail.
Stopped in at King Creek Station and got coffees (expensive) and petted and fed the camels. On the highway we saw a dead camel on the shoulder being eaten by two dingoes. The dirt here is really red and has finally begun to look like what we imagined “the outback” to look like.
Drove to Curtin Springs, filled up on diesel (which seemed really expensive) and considered camping there (free but a crowded dirt patch). Saw what we thought was Uluru for the first time on the way in - turned out to be another formation (Cooper’s Peak?). Had a couple ciders (5 Seeds)/beer and looked at pictures of Curtin Springs’ history, then decided to drive back to a free camp rest stop that we’d passed 20min earlier - WAY better choice, since there were only two other campers. Saw an incredible sunset with colors that we’d never seen before.
Made dinner at the tent, then one of the other couples camping came over and offered to show us “outer space” - a bit shocking as he was holding a Crocodile Dundee type knife. We went over to the campfire they had and talked for almost an hour...and we think their weasel dog snuck over and ate our leftover food. Which we should have put away, our bad.
