We woke up in Vis feeling like we should have made the island stays two nights each, as it seemed like we just got there when we had to leave. We headed out to see the part of town we hadn‘t walked yet - here are a few pics:
We liked the texture, light, door and window in this alleyway.
A privately built fortress around the corner from the hotel - with cannons...likely the ancestors of modern-day doomsday preppers.
This was the front of our hotel on Vis - fairly unassuming but was a nice, simple place
We only had a couple hours in the morning before we needed to catch the ferry back to Split, so we shared a “Dalmatian Breakfast” and had coffees, then grabbed our bags and walked to the ferry dock. To get to Brač island from Vis island entailed riding all the way back to Split (~2hrs), then catching another ferry a couple hours later to Brač that was about 50 minutes. Needless to say, we spent a good portion of the day on ferry boats traveling to the next island.
Another logistical challenge we had was caused by where the various ferries docked for runs between the mainland and the islands, compounded by where we found lodging. Here is a map of Brač island and the points we had to navigate:
We landed on the island in Supetar, stayed near Sumartin (in Selca) and departed from Bol, which made transportation a little more challenging. We got off the ferry and found a rental place to get a car for the day, which the people were pretty helpful at. Before renting the car we had to figure out the bus system to make sure we good get to the departing ferry. We found a bus that would work so went back to get the car - the car we rented this time was an automatic so we could share the driving.
There were many old (mostly abandoned) villages along the highway - here are some of the buildings we saw on the way to our lodging on the other end of the island.
It was getting later in the day so we decided to stop in the small village of Selca to see if they had restaurants. We had a great dinner at a local restaurant - it didn‘t seem like they see many tourists in the town.
This is a church in the main square of Selca where we ate.
We drove another 10 minutes to where the address said our apartment should be (funky address since it is in a small town on a coastal dead end road) - we eventually found it and were greeted by the host. We got checked into our room - the apartment is in a beautiful location but was very sparse on amenities (no soap, no coffee and no air conditioning).
After getting our luggage in, we took the car out to see some of the island before dark. We worked to cover as much terrain as we could, so decided to drive to the town of Bol to see “Rat Beach” (Plaža Zlatni Rat is the actual name) at sunset. Unfortunately the road was super windy so we missed sunset by ~15min.
We walked in the water of the pebble beach along one side of this natural spit - the pebbles were really deep and made walking really slow & hard. Sadly, this was all we had time for but were happy to share the experience.
We drove the winding road back in the dark and threaded our way to the parking space in front of the apartment. The road was clearly built for far fewer cars, so navigating took cooperation from all parties and was a bit like vehicle Tetris.
We settled into the room and set up the fan (remember no A/C) with the patio doors open - it was still pretty hot sleeping for most of the night 🥵.
