Into the Aegean

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

While the Pyara hotel was in a nice location and the staff were great, the beds were not comfortable so we didn’t get great sleep. On the topic of Turkish bedding, we’ve observed that many of the rooms had really large pillows, no top sheets and just a top cover which was Double or Full size, even when it was a King bed. We could usually work around the pillow and sometimes found extra blankets to use, but last night there were neither and so we’re pretty restless. Because of this, we chose to eat, pack and check out earlier than usual and get on the road to our next hotel in Bodrum.

Driving into Bodrum, we stopped on the outskirts of town to have lunch in a local döner shop, rather than look for parking in the heart of the town. The food was great, authentic and all we could eat for ~$5. We often get odd looks in these local

places since we think they are not frequently visited by tourists (let alone Americans).

After lunch we drove the remaining 30min to the Caresse Resort, then checked in to undoubtedly the most expensive place we’ve ever stayed (Bodum is ultra-spendy). Tammy continues to cleverly gather points and use them to get the best value, so this night will cost us $0 for the hotel. Here is the room view of the Aegean Sea and some marketing pics of the place:

After getting set up in our room we walked through the hotel to get an overview of the buildings and the beach, then freshened up in the room and worked on planning our Croatia trip some more. In the early evening we went to the beach area and swam a little, but it was not as warm as we’d expected. The water has gotten increasingly cooler the further West we’ve gone and we missed the bathtub temperatures of the waters near Antalya.

After warming up on the beach chairs (and Don experimenting with a left behind stand-up paddle board), we went back and changed for dinner. We sat on the patio looking at the water and had a delicious meal that was also paid by credit card benefits :-). We ended the night with the complimentary treats and wine that the hotel had left in our room, sitting on the balcony together in content amazement.
