A Whole Different Turkey

The view from our balcony this morning was unbelievable - the Mediterranean was super blue and the little village below us was going about its daily business.

We had a quick breakfast then chose to explore the Kaleiçi village more. Wandering through the street, here are a few pretty views:

Our friend at the hotel had mentioned a beach the we could walk to within a few minutes, so we set out to find it...

This looked promising...

When we found where the entrance might be, we were skeptical that we could use the beach. The beach looked really private and you had to enter through a fancy restaurant, so we imagined it would be either be off limits or expensive but we asked just to know. Unbelievably it was 30TL per person (~$4) and you had access to everything with drinks brought to your lounge chair!

We found a nice spot in the shade with our own way into the water and surrounded by Roman ruins...pinch us.

We swam and sat in the sun (Don a bit too much) for a few hours - so relaxing :-).

Then more exploring - look at thes cool old doors...

This is one entrance into the city...a first you think how cute and then you realize this is Hadrian’s Gate, dating from 130 A.D. and built for the visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian...wow.

For dinner we reserved a table at our rooftop terrace to watch the sunset, which was blocked a bit by the nearby buildings, but this view was still spectacular!

...and this one was alright too :-).

So this guy, typical of Turkish ice cream vendors was below our balcony so we watched him quite a bit. The vendors tend to put on quite a show with their ice cream, both to lure in new customers and when serving them. We didn’t find the ice cream that appealing, as it is actually kind of sticky and the cones are usually pretty soft and stale - but their show is usually pretty entertaining!

Here is a sample of their antics...
